Rainbow Trout in Baton Rouge.... Say What?.....

Thats right The BREC Ponds have been stocked again this year. I made an investigation to see for myself and the report is true. I managed to catch 17 trout and lost a few more at the bank. All fish were caught on a size 10 Wolly Bugger in Black, Brown & Olive.

Monday will be the last meeting for the year due to the availability of the rooms with Christmas. I will be doing a tying session on my version of the Cat's Whisker (Crappie Candy). Also we will discuss fishing outings for next year:

~Trip back to Arkansas (The Little Mo. River or The White River)
~Saltwater marsh fishing trip

“Ride the Bull” Recap...

There was 170 kayakers participating this year. Those numbers blew us away! We had a great feild and a wonderful tournament. No Bulls were caught on the fly, but there were several fly fishermen from other clubs such as: Fin-Addict Fly Fishers, Magnolia Fly Fishers, Red Stick Fly Fishers, Acadiana Fly Rodders present. It's hard to say how many folks actually fished flies because the rules allowed anglers to fish both gear and fly tackle - you didn't have to commit to just one. In fact, some flyrodders I know fished strictly gear because the top prizes were kayaks from Hobie and Kajun Kayak. Had a blast at the event. It was a first class event by all that put it on. Met some new people in the fly fishing world and made some good conversation. I managed to ride a bull but it was of the different color, still fun though. I fished most of the day with cracked crab and for the final 3.5 hrs I stuck it out throwing the 12wt. With a 750 grain line. What a workout that was. I now have a very sore arm from it but still fun. If you weren't there then you just missed the site of 170 kayaks across Caminada Pass. It was truley something to see.

For 2011, the venue has changed. Fishing this year will be at beautiful Lafreniere Park in Metairie.
- This tournament is open to all members of fly fishing clubs in the state of Louisiana.
- Fishing for the Rio Grande cichlid in beautiful Lafreniere Park in Metairie.
- Bragging rights for the year
- No entry fee
- Lunch and drinks provided for invited guests
- Maps of approved fishing areas will be available

Lafreniere Park in located just off Veterans Hwy. From I–10 west take the Veterans Blvd exit. Turn left onto Veterans Blvd. the first traffic light will be Downs Blvd. Turn left. Once in the park turn left at the first street.

CCA of Louisiana and Calmwater Charters are partnering again with The Backpacker and Kajun Custom Kayaks to bring you “Ride the Bull”, Louisiana’s First Extreme Kayak Fishing Rodeo on the Saturday, September 17th at Bridge Side Marina on Grand Isle, LA. Paddle craft fishermen will vie for several thousand dollars worth of prizes and prize money. The anglers that can catch the biggest redfish will take home the loot. The big prizes are being provided by The Backpacker and Kajun Custom Kayaks. The Backpacker, with locations in both Baton Rouge and Lafayette, will be providing a Hobie Outback Kayak package and Kajun Custom Kayaks will be donating one of their signature series kayaks for top winners. There will be great fishing equipment to round out the prizes for the top ten reds caught. In addition to a tournament t-shirt, participants also get a steak dinner on Friday night before the tournament at the captains meeting from 7-9pm at Bridge Side Marina. This will be a great spectator sport that you will be able to watch from the Grand Isle Fishing Bridge, Bridge Side Marina, the western beach of Grand Isle and the eastern end of Elmer’s Island. So bring your lawn chair, cooler, binoculars and umbrella and watch the action!

Murfreesboro, Arkansas Rainbow Trout Trip..

Myself, Lou Gros & Cosby Chaney made a trip to the Little Missouri River on Feb. 24th through the 27th. Rainbow Trout was on the target list on this trip. We stayed at the Riverside Cabins through Jim Simpson. I will add his info to the website as a link on the right side of the page if anyone is interested in staying at his place.

Anyway the weather was perfect and the fish were plentiful. A bad storm blew through Thursday afternoon and made for muddy conditions on Friday and Saturday. We did manage to venture away from the cabin to the Factory Site where we caught better Trout. The fishing was fun and non stop, but the company of friends made the trip much better. All of our fish were caught on Brown, Olive, Black Wolly Buggers and an all Pink Thread Ribbed Midge under a Strike Indicator in size 14, 12 & 10 for all flies used.

Myself and Lou tried to fool some of the Rising Trout with Dry Flies and managed to fool a few.

The accomadations provided by Jim Simpson made us feel right at home. Couldn't have asked for anything better. I recommend Riverside to anyone that is interested in fishing the Little Missouri in Murfreesboro, Arkansas. Here are a few more photos the rest can be found in the 2011 Albumn under the photos.

We will be planning to return back hopefully every year and make this a yearly visit as a club trip for years to come. Hope you enjoyed our report and the photos and hope you all can become a part of these trips.

2010 Year In Review........

I really didn't know what to expect when I jumped into this club organization process. I was very impressed to say that in our first year we had 12 members, and among those 12 members we had 4 of those as family members & 2 as new to the sport of Fly Fishing. I had the privilege to meet some really great people and make some new friends. I hope the friendships that were established will grow and lead to great things. We all faced challenges with fishing closures due to the oil spill crisis, but did manage to get in fishing time as the year progressed. We close out the 2010 year and begin our 2nd year with the hopes that it will be as great as the response that was recieved from the LA Sport, Boat & RV Show that was held in the Houma Terrebonne Civic Center on January 14th through the 16th. I hope to have a few fishing outings with our club or even if we join in with the other clubs that may be holding events in the areas nearby. Just because you are a member of the Fin-Addict Fly Fishers doesn't mean that you are only eligible to do things with just our club. We have been openly invited on multiple occasions to attend any functions with the Baton Rouge Red Stick Club.

I would also like to Congratulate Ricky Turner on breaking the Sportsman's League Rodeo Record Redfish on the Fly Rod this past year, which was held previously by myself. I have made some changes to the website as some of you may have already seen. The Photo Gallery has been changed to slide shows instead of individual pictures to save space on the site. The individual pictures can still be accessed if you click on the view all button on the bottom of the slide show. I will also be making some changes to the Video section to hopefully correct the lag in the videos and just run them through http://www.youtube.com/.

Also, there is an open invitation to anyone in the club whether it be a member or a friend of yours that may be interested in joining us for a trip. A few of us will be going to Murfreesboro, Arkansas to fish the Little Missouri River for Rainbow Trout, and if it is possible, maybe a Brown Trout if they exist in the river. We will be leaving on Thursday February 24th and returning on Sunday February 27th. The Fin-Addict Fly Fishers is a very openly run club. If there is anything that anyone would like to know more about, or would like to bring up and discuss, please feel free to speak. Also, I would like to thank those that helped out at the show this past weekend. Your help was greatly appreciated. May your fly rods be bent and your fishing be plentiful.
